What to eat in Jiufen – Ah Gan Taro Balls & Grandma Lai’s Yuyuan

Talking about tasty food and desserts in Jiufen, even if you may not have ever heard its name before, you must not miss this famous cousin called taro balls, also known as yuyuan. It is a popular food in Taiwan and Fujian Province that is made by mashed Taro and mashed sweet potato. In Taiwan, they’re basically served with tofu pudding, shaved ice and grass jelly. Both taste good when served hot or cold.



The sheer number of restaurants served Taro balls can be a little overwhelming, though. Ah Gan Taro Balls and Grandma Lai’s Yuyuan (Taro Balls) are the most famous places in the town. What to eat in Jiufen– Uncle’s Fishball & Ayun Qiezimian (Thick Fish Soup)

In Taiwan’s Northeast coast, there’re many fishing harbors over there. When you come to Jiufen which is near to the Northern coast, you may have a chance to taste the local seafood. Uncle’s Fishball is the most pop old store operating for 65 years. There’s always a long queue during dining hours. Each fish ball is made of fresh fish forcemeat, you can realize the taste of the sea with each bite.

Famous teahouse for movie shooting –A-Mei Tea House

With blessing of the famous film “A City of Sadness” directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien and the famous animation “Spirited away” directed by Hayao Miyazaki, one of the Taiwan Jiufen attractions A-Mei Tea House becomes to be a landmark.
